“The Snake In The Typewriter” is a misleadingly short story, embedded with links to longer stories and reflections. So, is there a linear way to experience this narrative journey?
Not quite.
To begin, pull up the project’s main page and start at the top. That’s about as linear as it gets. As you read, you will notice some words contain hyperlinks to further content. I recommend you explore these as you encounter them, preferably by opening a new tab. To open a hyperlink in a new window, right click the link and then select “Open Link in New Tab.” If you don’t choose that route, don’t worry! There is a link to take you “back to the story” at the bottom of every page.
You might note that there is not a way to jump from chapter to chapter sequentially within embedded pages. In order to explore each chapter the reader will have to navigate back to the origin story and read through to the next link (or, here’s a cheat: utilize the menu bar to skip to various segments). This is purposeful, as one of the fundamental aspects of this essay is its structure. I wish for the reader to gain awareness of how the spine of one story organizes the content, form, and possibilities of its embedded contrapuntal stories. Perhaps what will be most clear by the end is how there is no clear ‘master’ story at all.
Please feel free to provide feedback on your navigational experience. This is a living, breathing project that will continue to grow and change as I gather more stories.
